COPD Awareness Month – November 2017

We need to spread awareness of COPD!

Did you know that COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) is the 3rd leading cause of death in the U.S.? According to the COPD Foundation, COPD currently affects over 30 million Americans.

Know the Symptoms

COPD is often not found until the disease is very advanced because people do not know the warning signs.  If you experience any of these symptoms, or think you might be at risk for COPD, it is important to discuss the symptoms with your doctor. The COPD Foundation states the most common symptoms and signs of COPD are: Dyspnea – shortness of breath while doing everyday activities, chronic cough, wheezing, frequent respiratory infections, Cyanosis- blueness of the lips or fingernail beds, fatigue, and excessive phlegm.

Managing COPD

If you’re currently smoking, the most important thing you can do to slow the progression of your COPD is to quit! It’s a fact: Stopping smoking is the best thing you can do to slow the progression of your COPD.

Medication prescribed by your doctor or healthcare provider can help manage your symptoms. Many people with COPD are required to use oxygen therapy. If you are using oxygen therapy to manage your COPD symptoms, MIJA’s Critical Alert product line can help. Critical Alert is an electronic oxygen monitor with a low-pressure alarm. It is easy to use and provides the immediate notification you need to breathe easier about your oxygen status.
