Thanksgiving Holiday Safety Tips

Thanksgiving is a great time for family, friends and reflecting on all the things to be grateful for. When you think about Thanksgiving one word comes to mind for us, food! During this holiday the kitchen is easily the busiest part of the house. Lots of people like to contribute and it can be chaotic. We want to remind you of some of the most important safety tips this Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving by the numbers*

  • Thanksgiving Day 2013 was the leading date for home cooking fires with 1,550 fires. This was 230% above the average number of fires per day!
  • Thanksgiving is the top day for home cooking fires, followed by Christmas Day and Christmas Eve.
  • Unattended cooking was the main cause of cooking fires and deaths caused by fires.
  • Cooking equipment, like deep fryers and outdoor steamer kits, is the leading cause of home fires and civilian injuries and was the third leading cause of home fire deaths.

Safety tips For Thanksgiving Day

  • Never leave the kitchen if you are cooking on the stovetop.
  • Stay home while cooking the turkey with frequent check ins
  • Find something to keep children away from the stove.
  • Keep hot liquids and steam from foods like gravy, oils and coffee out of reach from children as these can cause serious burns.
  • Make sure pets cannot jump on counters or stove tops
  • Keep the floor clear to avoid tripping on kids, toys, or bags.
  • Keep knives out of the reach of children.
  • Be sure electric cords from an electric knife, coffee maker, plate warmer or mixer are not within easy reach of a child.
  • Keep matches, candles, and utility lighters out of the reach of children.
  • Never leave children alone in room with a lit candle.
  • Make sure your smoke alarms are working. Test them by pushing the test button.
  • Have a fire extinguisher ready and know where it is to be used in case of an emergency.
