Immunologists at Northeastern University have found that a new therapy that floods tumors with supplemental oxygenation can dramatically improve the effectiveness of cancer immunotherapy. The findings are a potential “breakthrough” that could dramatically increase survival rate of patients with cancer.
Lead researcher Michail Sitkovsky and his colleagues found that inhaling air that is 40-60 percent oxygen (2-3 times more concentrated than the air we breathe) helps arm and “awaken T cells” in the body’s immune system. This makes them more effective at destroying tumor cells. It also weakens tumor cell’s ability to outwit the body’s natural defenses.
The research is a culmination of 30 years of work involving doctors and researchers from some of the countries more prestigious universities, hospitals and medical schools. This list includes University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, the University Of Miami Miller School Of Medicine, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
Oxygen therapy’s effects could be even stronger when paired with other cancer immunotherapy treatments.
